Overview: Tea tree essential oil comes from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a small tree native to Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. Tea tree oil is produced by steam distillation of the leaves of the tea tree. Tea trees grow very fast and can be harvested from the second year onwards. The quantity and quality of the tea tree oil highly depends on the time it is harvested. Winter months are not suitable for harvesting as the yield is observed to be low. Tea trees should not be confused with regular tea varieties. It is believed that the tea tree got its name after the 18th century sailors made tea from the leaves which smells like nutmeg. However internal consumption of tea tree essential oil can have toxic effects as the oil is highly concentrated compared to natural leaves which have a very small amount of natural oil in it. Tea tree oil with high levels of Terpinen-4-ol and low levels of cineole is considered as high quality.  We supply Tea Tree essential oil of Australian origin.
