Overview: Bergamot bergaptene free essential oil has very high significance in the perfume manufacturing. It was an ingredient in the famous Eau de Cologne, created by Johan Maria Farina in the 18th century. About 100 tons of Bergamot oil are produced worldwide. The zest of the fruit is cold pressed by a kind of mechanical rasp called pellatrice. Quality wise the Italian origin is the reference in our industry. Calabria produces about 90 tons of oil. Ivory Coast with 5 to 6 tons and Argentina with 3 to 4 tons are far behind. Due to the presence of 0.2 % of bergaptene, this oil has the unfortunate characteristic of being photosensitive.

Production: There are several processes to eliminate the bergaptene in this oil. Among them some are using chemicals like caustic soda or potassium hydroxide. As a result the finished oil is no longer natural. Our process is purely physical. It is a double vacuum distillation. The first distillation is made at low temperature under very high vacuum. The by-products are fractionated and the bergaptene free fractions are added to the oil from the very first distillation. This method presents two major advantages, the optimal accuracy in odour and the guarantee of naturalness. This oil contains no more than 20 ppm of bergaptene.
