Overview: Broom absolute, derived from the exquisite flowers of Spartium Junceum using the gentle process of solvent extraction, is a cherished ingredient in the world of perfumery. Its sweet and floral aroma adds a touch of warmth and a honey-like note to fragrances, making it a favoured choice for crafting captivating scents. Whether used as a base or middle note, broom absolute imparts a unique and alluring character to perfumes. Presence of farnesol makes it a good fixative, helping to prolong the fragrance’s longevity.
The genet bush, abundant in Mediterranean countries, holds historical significance, with the South of France and Italy being renowned references for this remarkable product. Presently, South Italy stands as the primary supplier of broom flowers. Notably, two key regions provide the flowers: the Etna region in Sicily and the Aspromonte region in Calabria. Skilled harvesters meticulously gather the broom flowers by hand using combs. The harvest season spans from early May at sea level to June and July, reaching altitudes as high as 3500 feet. To ensure exceptional quality, it is vital that the flowers are free from any green stems or leaves.
Our extraction process involves washing the fresh flowers three times with hexane in a specialised equipment known as a “calandra.” This wheel-like apparatus contains baskets holding the flowers, which pass through the hexane solution. Through this meticulous process, the hexane is concentrated, resulting in the creation of the concrete. Subsequently, this concrete is processed into the final absolute using standard techniques. To give you an idea of the concentration, it takes approximately 1000 kg of flowers to yield just 0.6 kg of precious broom absolute.
