Overview: Madagascar Geranium Oil is sometimes referred to as “Geranium Bourbon” or “Bourbon Geranium Oil”. The name “Bourbon” in this context does not refer to the alcoholic beverage but rather to the former name of the island of Réunion, which was previously known as Île Bourbon. Geranium Bourbon is a specific type of Geranium Oil derived from the Pelargonium graveolens plant grown in Réunion (formerly known as Bourbon) and Madagascar. The term “Bourbon” is used to distinguish this particular variety of Geranium Oil from other types of Geranium Oil produced from different regions or species of Pelargonium. The specific climate and soil conditions in Madagascar and Réunion contribute to the unique aroma and characteristics of Geranium Bourbon, making it highly valued in the fragrance and aromatherapy industries. It is known for its delightful floral scent, and its therapeutic properties are appreciated in various wellness applications. The production of Geranium Oil involves a steam distillation process, where the aerial parts of the Pelargonium graveolens plant, such as leaves and flowers, are carefully collected and subjected to distillation. The yield is very low, on average, it takes around 500 kilograms of Geranium plant material to produce approximately 1 kilogram of essential oil. We supply the Madagascar origin oil as there is hardly any commercial production in Reunion Island. Geranium Oil production is typically a labour-intensive process. Small-scale farmers, often part of local cooperatives, play a significant role in cultivating the Geranium plants and harvesting the leaves and flowers for oil extraction. The sustainable and ethical sourcing of Geranium Oil is essential to ensure the conservation of the local ecosystem and support the livelihoods of farming communities. With the increasing demand for natural and sustainable products, Madagascar’s Geranium Oil continues to be a sought-after essential oil, cherished for its captivating fragrance and potential therapeutic benefits. Its popularity in the global market has contributed to Madagascar’s prominence as a leading producer of Geranium Bourbon.
