Overview: Seaweeds are known world wide. Coming from seas and ocean they often find applications in food and natural fertilizers. In Asia, seaweed cultivation has become a major industry. In France historically the perfume industry uses the Fucus vericolosus but some other species can be also of interest like Porphira red alga. Selection is very important as some are for food restricted. The weeds are sun dried and crushed.
Extraction: This is one of the most difficult products to extract. When leaves are well dried ethanol can be used. But more specifically a combination of authorized volatile solvents will do a less selective attraction with a higher yield. The first extract is then processed to Absolute by regular process.
Yield: Yields are very variable but average of 1 ton of seaweeds can give 6 to 10 kg of Absolute.
