Overview: Ylang ylang essential oil is produced by steam distillation of the flowers of Cananga Odorata. Ylang is native to Southeast Asia and is widely cultivated in Madagascar. Popularly known as the queen of perfumes, Ylang is one of the most extensively used natural ingredients in the perfume industry. Ylang is distilled in fractions. The distillation process is stopped on different stages to take different grades of the essential oil. In effect, there are five different types of ylang oil produced during the process. They are named Ylang ylang Extra, I, II, III and Complete based on the time the oil is taken. The difference between Ylang oils are as follows. During the distillation process, the lightest and most delicate notes escape first and the larger and heavier aromatic molecules released in a later stage. The number doesn’t indicate that “Ylang I” is superior to “Ylang III”, but it is about the difference in the constituents present in each grade.
Ylang Ylang Extra is the oil collected in the first two hours of the distillation process and considered as the best grade in perfumery. The oil is sweeter and has a very dense floral aroma compared to other grades. The distillation process is continued and the oil collected in the next stage is called Ylang Ylang I followed by II and III. When the distillation is carried out undisturbed for about 15 hours it creates Ylang Complete.
Ylang I is often considered as a choice for aromatherapy applications. It is similar to Ylang extra but slightly heavier with a hint of spice. The Ylang II also has a similar aroma but slightly less potent.
Ylang III the floral scent is deeper, less sweet but more herbaceous and earthy compared to other fractions. This oil is best suited for the production of cosmetics, soaps, shampoos and candles.
