Geranium is native to South Africa but is now cultivated throughout the world. There are several varieties of pelargoniums but the pelargonium graveolens is used to produce the essential oils. Geranium oil is known to be used as early as the ancient Egyptian times. Depending on the country it is cultivated, the oil may show different properties. In the fragrance industry, the widely used variety is Egyptian origin geranium oil. In Egypt, geranium is cultivated in the Beni Suef region mostly controlled by multiple small-time farmers.
